Nothing really interesting happened at work last night. My “to do” list from my supervisor was sparsely filled with mostly busywork. The last few hours of work were spent looking for useful apps for my iPad. I was so glad when seven rolled around this morning and I was heading home.
“You know?” George asked me as we were walking to my car in a frigid temperature below the twenties. “Black people weren’t built for these kinds of climates. This brown skin is made for hot climates and protecting us from the sun.”
George can always consistently make me grin.
“Think of your freedom and that nice paycheck you will get for persevering,” I replied back to George in encouragement.
On the way to McDonald’s, I stopped to fill up my car and experienced one of the coldest, most biting winds I could remember. I didn’t envy George of having to work out in this weather.
A Techno Packed Father…
Dad shocked me a few years ago when he got a cellular phone. Dad has always been technically illiterate. He shocked once again a few weeks ago when he figured out how to connect his phone via Bluetooth to his BMW X5. That way he would talk hands free as dad has a very bad habit of talking on the phone while driving.
Lately, dad has been fascinated with my iPad. Dad showed me a Youtube video of The King’s Speech last night – a movie he is keenly interested in seeing. I watched as he adeptly used my iPad to find and then show me the video.
This morning dad called me.
“What’s the deal with this 3G and the iPad?” dad asked me.
“It means you can connect with a cellular connection and get internet access practically anywhere in the US,” I replied.
“Would you get it?” dad asked me.
“I would if I could afford it,” I told him. “Are you thinking about getting an iPad?”
“I’m thinking about it,” dad replied.
I will not be surprised if dad comes by here tonight to help him unpack his new iPad. He has come a long way from the pre-cellular days.

Gosh - maybe dad will be feeling generous and hook you up with 3G as well! What a nice thought.
Good to hear that George is doing well and still working! I was so afraid that he might not be strong enough to hold up his end of the bargain. Somehow I think you've really helped him with all this!
Good job, my friend!
Love,
Grannie
I got a Nook for Christmas, but haven't figured it out yet. Still waiting for my son to come and show us.
We had a record amount of snowfall yesterday. 29 inches in my town. Check out my pics if you have time.
Sir:
It was very nice to hear about George. What else has been going on with him? I have missed your discussion of his meanderings, especially during your prolonged hiatus.

I'm with George. I'm ready for spring! I'm happy to read George is still working :-)
My dad just discovered twitter, sigh.
This is actually worse then when the Rabbi found me on twitter.
Your dad will LOVE the ipad.
It is cold here too. I don't want to spend much time outdoors. Good for your dad on getting up with the technology.
I'm with George, it's too damn cold out! Wow, your Dad coming to you for advice for a change, that's refreshing to hear. My husband has a BMW and we LOVE the bluetooth in it. He's an accountant and he goes from client to client, and having handsfree access to a phone in the car is the ONLY way to do it.
Bought husband a wifi ipad for Christmas, he loves it.
For me, I have grown to love the cold. Today is a WARMER than usual 15 degrees (Fahrenheit) for us, and it was so pleasant walking my five miles outside in the snow this morning at 5:30am. I am actually to the point now where I enjoy it even in the colder days (single digits are common, and we have had a few days with temperatures in the negatives). It really is all a matter of perspective. I used to despise winter every year, but I decided to look at it a different way... I told myself, "Why would I want to spend 5 months every year of my life grumbling and feeling aggravated about the weather?" What a waste of my life? So, I figured out a way to embrace the cold. It has been wonderful for my emotional health.

The cold is not the problem, it's the ICE on the roads that keep us from getting to where we need to go. I think you can get out and about with snow, but that ice is another story. We southerners get a bad rap about our inability to get on with life when the white stuff falls, but ice brings everything to a complete halt. The interstates around Atlanta have been completely stopped, mostly with 18-wheelers unable to negotiate the icy roads. Did you see the guy in Marietta that set his BMW on fire spinning his wheels trying to get across an icy road? The news media caught every bit of it on tape (or whatever media they use now).
Maybe your dad will pay for you a G3 network connection. That might be a bargaining chip to helping him get his set up.
