“Did you have to work last night?” Anne asked me worriedly with a frown on her face about my night off as I pulled into the McDonald’s drive-thru this morning at around 6am.
“My dogs are anal like me and the show must go on,” I told her with a chuckle.
“When will you go to bed?”
“Oh, around lunch time,” I replied. “Possibly sooner.”
Anne sighed a sigh of relief and handed me my big bag of four sausage biscuits and three hashbrowns. Anne told me she was also no stranger to working odd hours as well.
I had both my sausage biscuits eaten by the time I had arrived home giving the other two to the dogs who greedily lapped them up.
Hirsute Pursuit…
Dad was still going on and on about my haircut last night. It reminds of me of Hyacinth Bucket on that British Comedy Keeping Up Appearances. He then told me the next thing I needed to do was to keep my fingernails trimmed on a regular basis. I didn’t tell him that my iPad would take care of that. It is impossible to use with longer fingernails.
“I want you to go back to college,” dad said after asking me to turn up The Weather Channel and he leaned back getting comfortable on the sofa. “I’ll pay for the costs.”
“I’m just not college material,” I replied to dad honestly before a great deal of money would be spent on a futile effort. “I would go to trade school, though.”
“Like what kind of trade school?” he asked warily.
“To be a computer repairman or a car mechanic,” I replied. “I would love to work on BMWs or Lexus cars.”
Dad wasn’t too happy with the thought of that feeling it was beneath me. Just give me some tools and an older car with a problem to work on and I will be happy.
After-Thoughts…
We had one of the biggest frosts I have ever seen here this morning. I hopped in the car and drove up to Kroger to get some sodas a moment ago. I thought my car would never warm up. Everything was touched by frost’s cold tendril touch.
Memories of Anne also come flooding back from grade school as I drove home. Her sister, Wendy, was my age and a spitfire. I can’t remember her younger brother’s name, but Anne was always the shy and kind one of the bunch.

Oh Andrew..haha..I love Hyacinth!
Hyacinth is the best!!
Oslow's my man.
Give Anne a valentine on one of your drive-thru's and see where it may take you. She sounds like a really nice person, Andrew. And...I think you would make an excellent computer tech. Tell your dad they make PLENTY of money too so its not to be taken lightly.
I love all the different thoughts you share with us about your days and life, Andrew! What stood out the most in this post is your Dad's offer of college. I understand that it might not be the right fit for you, and I think the idea of a trade school is awesome, just the fact that he has come to the realization that Andrew is moving on with his life, making something good of it, is amazing considering how limited his view of what you could accomplish was in the past!! You are to be congratulated for totally revising his opinion of you solely on your actions in this past year and how you have proven yourself to him over and over. Way to go, Andrew!! :-)
Our local college offers all kinds of programs. Just looking into it might spark some excitement.
Have a nice Sunday Andrew!
I look forward to my relief showing up in the mornings as well. I wish they came in on time. They have no idea how grateful we are when they finally show up.
Enjoy your day. It sounds like your life is going extremely well!
Ditto to JTS, very well said.
I LOVE "Keeping Up Appearances".
Don't kid yourself, a good technician with BMW, Lexus or Toyota can make good money. My brother has worked for Toyota for over 30 years and has made a very good living. He is like you, extremely smart and he has a college degree, but just is not cut out for a desk job. We need good technicians so go for it.
ITA with Tee about mechanics making good money. But I think with your technical bent you should go get your A++/Microsoft certification so you can work on networks and other PC troubleshooting problems. You can either go to the community college or a local technical school.
Hope you don't mind me adding my 2 cents (a nickel with inflation...)
With your former college experience and the retail mgmt. skills you are acquiring at Wal-Mart, pair that with a serious technical degree/certificate, and you'd be a candidate for a professional management position -- maybe such as running the Technical Service/Procurment Dept. at a large dealership or vendor. With a job like that might come good benefits and enough salary to maintain an excellent standard of living.
I'm a fan of Keeping Up Appearances. Hyacinth is a trip.
I could see you doing either, a computer tech or a mechanic.
Her brother's name is Jeffery. Tell Anne I said, "hey!"
